Expandable Flute Choir

The Expandable Form

These arrangements are extremely versatile in any flute choir since they are written in the "expandable form". One piccolo and three "C" flutes or four "C" flutes, depending on how the arrangements are scored, work successfully as a quartet. As the other instruments are added, they are used to expand the harmonic structure and/or introduce new counter melodies. Optional bass and drum parts will further enhance the dimension of these remarkable arrangements when used. All arrangements come with "C" substitute parts for transposing instruments.

"America The Beautiful" is one of the most beautiful patriotic songs ever written and may be considered our nation's favorite song. The melody is simple but yet so majestic. It is one of those songs that exuberates pride for our country. I have included two different versions of the song in this publication. Each is unique and different and will have varying uses for different kinds of performances. Version 1 is the shortest of the two arrangements. It is more traditional in style and straight forward. Version 2, on the other hand, is almost twice as long and totally different. This arrangement is more majestic in style, has an introduction, modulations and incorporates interludes between each of the four times you hear the melody.

    Music By: Jay Ungar

    Arranged By: Ricky Lombardo

This title may be easily recognized as the theme used in the TV mini series "The Civil War". We have been asked to do an arrangement of this song more then anything else in the history of our company. This haunting melody works perfectly with flutes. The arrangement is very melodic, brimming with beautiful harmonies, rhythmically easy and not difficult to master. There are two exact versions in different keys in this single publication; the first in "Bb" major and the second in "C" Major. Some of the fingering combinations on the low notes are not as difficult when using the version in "C" Major, which will make the arrangement more assessable with younger players. Traditional Japanese Folksong

(4 "C" Flutes, Alto, Bass and Contra Bass Flutes with "C" Substitute Part for Alto Flute)

This is a traditional Japanese folksong depicting spring, the season of cherry blossoms. The pentatonic (five-note) scale that is most familiar to us is derived from steps 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 of the major scale. Melodies like "Oh, Susanna" and "Weevily Wheat" are built on this scale. "Sakura, Sakura" is based on a distinctive pentatonic scale. The melody is simple and basic without many notes or difficult rhythms. Even though the definition of "Sakura, Sakura" is cherry blossoms, depicting spring; the melody has a cetain melancholy quality. Today's multicultural awareness makes this well-known Japanese folksong a good bet for any concert program. Your ensemble will find it easy to pour all of their emotions and passion into performing this lovely piece. Its haunting melody will enchant musicians and audience alike as the players emulate the Japanese characteristics of the song.
